Setting Sail on the Schooner Alliance from Yorktown, VA

IMG_1110Had the wonderful opportunity to sail on the beautiful Schooner Alliance out of Yorktown, VA with a few friends, recently.

Laura & Greg Lohse and crew were wonderful and know the ins and outs of sailing. The Schooner was surprisingly smooth as she glided across the York River, passing the Yorktown Battlefield, where the Revolutionary War was fought and won. We sailed past the Victory Monument and past the beautiful neighborhoods that line the York River… we sailed into the peaceful and waters leaving stress behind us!

My friends heard they could lend a hand at setting the sails… and they were anxious to give it a try.

The sails on the Alliance are set the traditional way, with block and tackle, and muscle. One of my friends commented that this might just be the closest thing to a “Barefoot Cruise” he would experience!

If heading down to the Tidewater area, don’t miss this wonderful experience.

While down in Yorktown Riverwalk Landing, stroll through the picturesque streets, with theirĀ  art galleries, antique and specialty shops. Visit the museums offering hands on programs and exhibits. Relax on the sandy beach at river’s edge; take a ride on our free trolley; enjoy the sounds of Fifes and Drums during one of their performances.
There are a variety of restaurants to try, some with a view of the York River.

Don’t miss the candlelight walking tour complete with tales of ghosts said to haunt the village, or the free Friday night concert series on the Green.
